The Shelbourne Stories

Commissioned by Studio Host; a collective of notable names in Irish dance, media, sport and history alongside long-standing members of The Shelbourne Hotel, recount their favourite personal moments within the 'Grand Dame of Dublin', as they celebrate their 200 year anniversary.

I’ve had the privilege of filming The Shelbourne Stories, a series capturing personal memories from celebrities, staff, and guests deeply connected to this iconic hotel. These recollections highlight the hotel’s lasting influence on Ireland’s history and its people.

In January 1988, Gerald Lawless’s career brought him from Bahrain to The Shelbourne, shortly after he and his wife adopted their daughter, Angelina. While staying at the hotel, the Lawless family completed Angelina’s naturalisation papers, with her address officially listed as “Angelina Lawless, The Shelbourne Hotel, St. Stephen’s Green.”

For two centuries, The Shelbourne has been the backdrop to countless love stories, from Eugene’s parents meeting on the ballroom dance floor in 1945 to Lucius Farrell’s discovery of the hotel’s role in his parents’ wedding. Michael Flatley recalls unforgettable nights at the Horseshoe Bar, and rugby legend Paul O’Connell reflects on moments of calm with the Irish team before big games. Pat Shortt shares a hilarious tale about Gay Byrne’s final live broadcast at the hotel, while Brent Pope recounts cherished Christmas memories.

The series also celebrates the people who make The Shelbourne extraordinary, like Cathy O’Shea, the Wedding Manager, who turns dreams into reality for couples, and Mary, the head florist, whose stunning arrangements elevate every celebration. Derek, the French polisher, preserves the hotel’s timeless beauty with care and dedication.

Filming these stories has been a powerful way to capture the essence of The Shelbourne Hotel, preserving the memories and connections that have shaped its 200-year legacy.
